The Homestead is the heart of a family retreat in the Teton Valley near Driggs, Idaho, flanked by the Teton Range and the Big Hole Mountains. Its compact footprint restores an existing 1800s-era homestead nestled in an aspen grove near a creek. Helm retained and reconfigured the original structure into an open, multiuse plan with curated views to the landscape. The design draws on a homesteader's handmade aesthetic, incorporating bespoke cedar cladding and an outdoor stone hearth built by local craftspeople. The interior continues the theme with custom tile, casework, and wallpaper. An efficient envelope and high-performance systems provide resilience and allow the home to operate off-grid as needed, offering a retreat even in the most severe weather events.

The Homestead serves as a basecamp for this Teton Ranch, with footpaths extending from this site into the property. Helm completed a careful site analysis, identifying a handful of destinations, each with their own microclimates, views, and exposures. Some of these destinations are envisioned as home sites for our client’s family, while others are planned to remain as protected spaces. Our team developed the ranch map to designate important places and plan for future improvements with sensitive environments and habitat restoration in mind.
